Cal Wong
Content Strategist and Corporate Copy Writer
After a long day in a banking job I had come to detest, I wearily took the lift down to the lobby. Feeling the heaviness of my eyes and the tension in my shoulders, I assessed the best way to get back to my home in the northern suburbs of Sydney at 2am. As I walked out of the lift the glass lobby doors metaphorically smacked me in the face, reminding me where I actually was – Hong Kong, my new home of 12 months that had become a blur of late nights in the office. This was the moment that I decided to pursue the career I had always wanted: journalism and writing.
Fast forward half a decade, and I am now a content marketer, storyteller, communications and multimedia professional and former award-winning journalist.
I craft messaging and content strategies, producing and creating multimedia and editorial content for clients from a cross-spectrum of industries.
As a journalist, I have produced editorial, broadcast and video & documentary work for SPH, The Diplomat, SCMP, BBC, ABC and MSNBC; covering travel and lifestyle, sports and geopolitics. In 2015 I was awarded the Human Rights Press Award for my video reporting work.
As an editor, I have been responsible for both print and digital publications of Asia’s largest regional adventure-travel magazine.
As a content marketer, I have created works for the Hong Kong Rugby Union, efinancialcareers, Tata, CA, Wanda, Microsoft, and Ford, to name a few. Native to both pen and paper, as well as digital. I am savvy with journalistic research methods, with a strong background in strategy, business and journalism as well as modern digital distribution platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn.
I spent what is likely to be too much money on formal education, graduating from Macquarie University, Sydney with a Bachelors degree majoring in Resource and Environmental Management and a Masters in Professional Accounting, I later qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Australia in 2008 with PricewaterhouseCoopers. In 2015, I also qualified for a Masters in Journalism from the University of Hong Kong. I am fluent in English and conversant in Cantonese. My Mandarin is terrible.
I am a data driven, creative storyteller with strong expertise in writing for news outlets as well as copy writing, video production, digital media, and strategic planning, while also understanding the commercial aspects of communications.
I am passionate about engaging stories that ignite interest and emotion in the audience.
